About White Bush Potato
The Lorna Napurrula Fencer White Bush Potato painting relates to the Napurrula-Nakamarra creation stories connected with Yurmurrpa. These ceremonial stories recount the Ancestors digging the first yarla, or bush potato, from the earth around an underground water source at Yurmurrpa.
Bush potato is therefore central to both the subject and cultural story represented in the work. The composition uses strong repeated forms and areas of contrasting colour across the paper.
About Lorna Napurrula Fencer
Lorna Napurrula Fencer was a Warlpiri artist from Lajamanu in the Northern Territory. She was born near Chilla Well in 1920 and died in 2006.
She is acknowledged as one of the important innovators of the Warlpiri art movement from Lajamanu and was a custodian of her culture. Her paintings frequently explored the Napurrula-Nakamarra creation stories associated with her brother’s custodial site at Yurmurrpa.
These stories form an important part of the subject matter found throughout her work and connect her paintings with ceremony, ancestral narratives and Country.
