Unpainted Bullroarer, Traditionally these were used strictly by men. When swung rapidly by the string in a circular motion the bullroarer will let off a roaring sound. This warns women and children a ceremony is taking place and to ward away evil spirits. These bullroarers are made of hardwood timber and are approximately 25cm long.

The bullroarer does not have a single universal Aboriginal name, as Australia has hundreds of distinct Indigenous languages. One well-documented traditional name from southeastern Australia is turndun (or tindun), while other language groups use specific sacred-secret terms known only to initiated members
