Gloria was born and raised in Utopia, north of Alice Springs, and first gained artistic recognition in the 1970’s for her work in silk batik. As part of the first group to experiment with canvas in the 1980’s, Gloria developed unique techniques to enrich the simple linear style of her Awelye paintings, using tools like sponges, handwork and even a toilet brush. Her most renowned work features Leaves although she also paints other Dreamings, including Awelye (Women’s Ceremony) and Arnkerrthe (Mountain Devil Lizard).
